Hurricane Shutters for North Topsail Beach, NC
North Topsail Beach is the most northern and least developed section of Topsail Island — predominantly oceanfront stilt homes with direct Atlantic exposure, many owned by out-of-town investors and vacation rental operators. The combination of high exposure, elevated piling construction, and absentee owners makes motorized rolldowns and accordion shutters especially popular here.

Which hurricane shutter is right for a North Topsail Beach home?
We install all seven hurricane shutter types throughout North Topsail Beach — custom-fabricated to your exact openings, engineered to meet NC coastal building code wind-load requirements.
Accordion Shutters
North Topsail Beach takes the worst of it. This is the most exposed stretch of the island, open to the ocean on one side and the inlet at the north end, and the town is the first place on Topsail to see overwash when a storm tracks right. Whole-house coverage is not optional here the way it can be further south. Accordions close an entire house in about ten minutes, one person, no ladder, which matters on a road that gets cut off early. They stay mounted year-round in their side housings, so a house that sits empty for weeks at a time is never waiting on someone to drive out with a load of panels in the back of a truck.
- Whole house closed in about ten minutes
- Always in place on a house that sits empty
- No one has to drive out ahead of the storm
Rolldown Shutters
More than anywhere else on Topsail, North Topsail is owned by people who are not here. Electric roll-downs are the only system that closes without a human on site: a wall switch, a remote, or a phone from wherever you actually are. For the oceanfront units along New River Inlet Road they also solve the glass problem — these are tall spans facing directly into the weather, and a roll-down curtain covers a full slider in one piece. The housing sits above the opening and the curtain disappears into it when open, so nothing is visible from the beach. Manual override crank standard on every system. We do not fit battery backup: temperamental, and useless without frequent recharging.
- Closes with nobody on site
- Covers a full oceanfront slider in one piece
- Nothing visible from the beach when open
Bahama Shutters
Bahamas do two jobs on a North Topsail elevation. Propped out over the glass they shade a west- or ocean-facing window through the summer and cut the cooling load on a unit that may be sitting empty with the air running. When a storm is named the prop rod comes out and the panel drops flat against the opening. Rated versus decorative is the distinction that decides the price: only the rated fixed-blade version at \$60/sq ft meets ASTM E1886/E1996 and qualifies for a wind mitigation credit. The \$55 decorative version is shade and appearance only. Any standard RAL powder-coat color is available, which is usually what a condominium association needs to hear before it approves anything.
- Cuts cooling load on an empty unit all summer
- Only the $60 rated version earns insurance credit
- Any RAL color for condominium association approval
Colonial Shutters
Colonials are the hinged louvered pair either side of a window, folded flat to the wall when open and swung together and bolted when not. On this end of the island they go on the single-family houses rather than the condo buildings — the traditional elevations that a roll-down housing would fight. There is no track to keep clear and nothing to store, which counts for a house on pilings where storage means the ground floor and the ground floor is the part that floods. Extruded aluminum rather than wood, so salt air does not eat them. As with Bahamas, only the rated version at \$60/sq ft carries the ASTM certification your insurer will credit.
- Nothing to store on a house built on pilings
- Aluminum construction survives direct salt exposure
- Suits traditional elevations, not condo towers
Hurricane Screens
Decks and covered porches facing the water are the standard layout here, and they are the openings rigid shutters cannot cover without a post through the middle. StormTex aramid screens span thirty feet and more with nothing in the center, and because the fabric is woven you keep the ocean view while they are deployed. On the larger condo buildings they have a second use that gets them approved quickly: a screened deck is a rentable amenity in June as much as it is protection in September. Porches, lanais and covered outdoor rooms — not fitted directly against glass.
- Spans 30+ ft of deck with no center post
- A rentable amenity as well as storm protection
- Ocean view stays open while deployed
Storm Panels
Panels are the cheapest rated protection available and they carry the identical ASTM E1886/E1996 rating as anything permanent, which is why they are common on the single-family houses here. The honest caveat for North Topsail specifically is deployment: panels only work if somebody is on site to put them up, and on this end of the island a lot of owners are not. If the house is a rental you are relying on a management company to send someone before a storm that is already closing the road. For a full-time resident with storage space they are excellent value. For an absentee owner, spend the difference on something that closes without you.
- Identical wind rating at the lowest installed cost
- Excellent value if you are here to deploy them
- Honestly not the right buy for an absentee owner
Flat Polycarbonate (Lexan)
Flat poly handles the openings that nothing else fits: fixed picture windows, arched transoms, and the odd shapes that come with oceanfront units designed around the view. Sheets are cut to the exact opening, mounted permanently on stainless lag bolts with spacers holding an air gap, and left there. Because the material is optically clear the glass still reads as glass from outside and the room still gets full daylight inside. For an absentee owner it has one advantage no other product can match: it is already up. There is nothing to deploy, nobody who has to drive out, and no decision to make when a storm is two days out.
- Already in place — nothing to deploy, ever
- Fits the odd shapes that come with a view
- Optically clear, full daylight retained

North Topsail Beach Hurricane Shutter Questions
Common questions about hurricane shutter installation in North Topsail Beach and Onslow County, NC.
North Topsail Beach: Engineered to Exceed Code
North Topsail Beach, on the Onslow County end of the island, takes some of the most exposed wind loads on the NC coast. Under ASCE 7-16, which the current NC Building Code is based on, the ultimate design wind speed here runs roughly 150 mph and up depending on location (Risk Category II). The area sits within the Wind-Borne Debris Region, where the NC Building Code requires protected openings — so hurricane shutters are a code requirement here, not just a precaution.
We treat that figure as a floor, not a target. Before installing, AHS performs a site-specific design pressure analysis for your North Topsail Beach property — accounting for the home’s height, exposure, roof geometry, and the loads each opening will actually see — and engineers every installation to exceed those numbers rather than simply meet code.
