Storm panels on Topsail Island, and when spending less is the right call

Aluminum storm panels on Topsail Island are $22/sq ft installed. Clear polycarbonate panels are $26/sq ft. Both carry the same ASTM E1886/E1996 rating as accordions, roll-downs and rated Bahamas, and both count identically toward a wind mitigation credit. What differs is the labor, not the protection.

That distinction matters more on this island than most places, because a good number of Topsail houses are in a different position from a mainland home. Some are newly rebuilt and the owner has already spent heavily. Some are held with a realistic view of how long the lot stays buildable. Some are rentals where the return does not justify a premium system. In all three cases, protecting every opening at $22 is a better outcome than protecting half of them at $52, and we would rather say that plainly than sell up.

The clear polycarbonate option at $26 is the upgrade worth considering rather than the jump to a permanent system. Aluminum makes a covered room completely dark; clear keeps daylight in and lets you see the weather. On a rental it also means a guest arriving to a boarded house does not find every room black.

The labor is real. Panels are carried out, lifted in and fastened before each storm, then taken down and stacked after. On a piling house that means up and down exterior stairs with each one, which is the part people underestimate when they compare the quote to an accordion quote.
