New Bern Hurricane Shutter Questions
Common questions about hurricane shutter installation in New Bern and Craven County, NC.
Built to Exceed New Bern Wind Loads
New Bern sits inland at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent rivers in Craven County. Under ASCE 7-16, the basis for the current NC Building Code, the ultimate design wind speed here runs around 140 mph (Risk Category II) — lower than the barrier-island figures, but still substantial, and parts of the area near the broad river basins carry meaningful wind and surge exposure. Hurricane and tropical-storm winds tracking up the rivers reach New Bern regularly.
As everywhere we work, the code figure is a starting point. AHS performs a site-specific design pressure analysis for each New Bern property — accounting for the home’s height, exposure, and proximity to open water — and engineers every installation to exceed the calculated loads rather than simply meet code.
