Professional Installation

Barrier Island Installation — Every Fastener Engineered for Salt Air

Wrightsville Beach sits in the highest Wind-Borne Debris Region designation in New Hanover County — every installation is engineered to the maximum DP ratings for this exposure zone. We perform a site-specific design pressure analysis on every project before a single fastener is set. All hardware is stainless steel or marine-grade coated — zinc-plated hardware corrodes rapidly in the salt-saturated air of a barrier island environment.

Our own trained crew — never subcontractors — handles everything from HOA pre-approval through permit coordination, fabrication, and final installation. Learn about our installation process or call +19102561288 to schedule your free estimate.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Hurricane Shutters in Wrightsville Beach, NC

The questions we hear most at Wrightsville Beach estimate visits. For more, see the full AHS FAQ page.

Prices range from $26/sq ft for aluminum storm panels to $70/sq ft for articulating Bahama shutters. Accordion shutters — the most popular Wrightsville Beach choice — start at $38/sq ft installed. Rolldowns start at $52/sq ft (manual) or $52/sq ft + $700/opening (electric). All include our 7-year workmanship warranty. Use our cost calculator for an instant estimate.
Accordion shutters are the top choice — a single person can secure an entire multistory beach house in under 20 minutes before evacuation. On a barrier island with one bridge off, deployment speed is critical when a hurricane warning is issued. For luxury homes and absentee owners, motorized rolldowns offer push-button security that can be triggered remotely.
Yes. The classic 1960s–70s cottages on the south end often have settled wood-frame walls, window openings that have drifted from their original dimensions, and limited structural depth for anchoring. We assess anchor points carefully on these homes and specify fastener lengths that reach structural framing — not just sheathing. A thorough site visit is especially important for older cottage stock.
Wrightsville Beach is in a Wind-Borne Debris Region under NC building code, requiring protection of all openings in new construction and permitted renovations. For existing homes, shutters are not legally mandated without permit work — but they are required to qualify for wind mitigation insurance credits, and they are strongly recommended given the barrier island’s direct Atlantic exposure.
Yes — we strongly recommend scheduling your free estimate in March or April before hurricane season demand peaks. Standard lead time from estimate to installation is 2–4 weeks in off-season. When a named storm approaches, our Wilmington-based mobile team can provide emergency installation for properties with existing track hardware. Call +19102561288 any time.
Yes. Rated shutters protecting all openings qualify for wind mitigation credits in NC. We provide installation documentation after every job. For many Wrightsville Beach homeowners, annual insurance savings offset a meaningful portion of the shutter cost over 5–10 years.

The team installed kevlar enforced rollup hurricane screens all around our porch 5 years ago. We purchased them because a relative has them and was very pleased. We live right on the water near the mouth of the Neuse River in Oriental so they get tested regularly. They’ve protected our house through tropical storms, snow storms and hurricanes. They’ve held up and continue to work well. They weren’t inexpensive, but well worth the money through our experience. We highly recommend them!

I am very pleased with my new white hurricane shutters that can easily be pulled shut even from indoors in case of really windy weather. These are so much more practical than the heavy metal shutters we had to install for strong storms and then remove again in order to see out.

I had an excellent experience with American Hurricane Shutters! Mr. Burns met us promptly at our convenience to explain his array of products. We chose the accordion style hurricane shutters for our Ocean front side. I was notified in a timely fashion when they were about to arrived and allowed to pick a convenient date for installation at our house on Wrightsville Beach NC. The installers were kind enough to wait for us to come after they were finished do demonstrate their function. I tore a rotator cuff trying to close our 30 yr old rusty shutters and now can close these just using my finger tips! I highly recommend this company.

Great experience. Had an issue with the manufacturer's finish a year later, and they replaced the hurricane shutter without question. The installation was thorough as we expected the first time, but many businesses attempt to evade warranty work or address their problems once they've received their payment. Not here. 100% recommended. Was an excellent option for our home in Surf City.

The AHS team did a great job for us. We were not in town for much of the planning and installation, so placed lots of trust in their team. The communication was great, the work exceptional, and they followed up promptly on small issues until everything was complete. I would highly recommend.

🛈 Hurricane Shutters for Wrightsville Beach Guide

Engineered Beyond the Code Minimum for Barrier-Island Exposure

As a barrier island, Wrightsville Beach sits at the upper end of New Hanover County’s wind exposure. The ASCE 7-16 ultimate design wind speed here is approximately 150 mph and up depending on location (Risk Category II), and the whole island falls within the Wind-Borne Debris Region, so opening protection is required under the NC Building Code. Full Atlantic exposure and wind-driven debris make this a more demanding environment than locations even a few miles inland.

We treat the code figure as a starting point rather than a target. AHS performs a site-specific design pressure analysis on each Wrightsville Beach property — measuring the actual loads a home’s particular openings will see given its height and orientation — and builds to exceed those numbers.
