Overview

The Right Call for Most Coastal Homeowners

Accordion hurricane shutters are the most popular permanent storm protection system on the Carolina coast, and for good reason. They fold to each side of the opening on a permanently mounted track, deploy in under a minute, and lock without tools. There is no storage requirement, no hardware to lose before a storm, and no ladder needed for upper-floor windows.

Every accordion shutter we install is custom-fabricated to your exact opening dimensions from 6063-T6 extruded aluminum — the same alloy used in structural aerospace and marine applications. We fasten each track directly into your home’s structural framing using 18-8 stainless steel screws sized to our site-specific Design Pressure analysis. Generic spec sheets don’t cover your property. We calculate the actual wind load for your specific address.

Our accordion shutters meet ASTM E1886, E1996, and TAS 201/202/203 certification requirements. Every installation includes full product approval documentation for your insurer’s wind mitigation form — which typically reduces homeowner insurance premiums in NC and SC.

What You Need to Know

Everything About Accordion Hurricane Shutters

Straight answers from the team that installs these every week on the Carolina coast.

How They Work

Accordion panels fold on a hinge track and stack neatly at each side of the opening when open. To deploy, pull from both sides and lock the center bar. The entire process takes under 60 seconds for a standard window. With regular use, a typical house can be fully deployed in about 15 minutes.

What They Are Made Of

6063-T6 extruded aluminum panels with integrated neoprene weather seals. Locking mechanisms use 304 stainless steel to resist the salt-air corrosion that seizes cheaper hardware within a few years.

Who They Are Best For

Full-time residents, rental property owners who need fast pre-storm deployment, and anyone who cannot or will not store removable panels. The go-to system for sliding glass doors and large openings.

Colors Available

Powder-coated in white, beige, tan, and bronze (near-black) as standard. HOA color matching available on request. All powder coat is marine-grade and backed by our finish warranty.

Insurance Benefits

Properly installed accordion shutters qualify for wind mitigation credits in NC and SC. We complete the wind mitigation form and provide all product approval documentation. Most customers see meaningful premium reductions within the first renewal cycle.

7-Year Warranty

Our locally-leading 7-year workmanship warranty covers the installation. We return for paid service at any point during the shutter lifetime. We have been doing this since 2003 and we will still be here.

Beyond Storm Protection

Security, Energy Savings & Daily Convenience

Accordion shutters do more than protect against hurricanes. They add value every day of the year.

Home Security

Accordion shutters act as a strong physical deterrent to intruders. Standard push locks would need to be ground off with power tools, while mortise locks would require cutting through the shutter itself. Most intruders rely on quick, unseen entry — power tools give police or your family critical response time. Accordion and rolldown shutters are our top recommendations for coastal security.

Energy Efficiency

In a closed or semi-closed position, accordion shutters reflect the sun’s harsh rays and provide shade. This additional layer of insulation helps keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, reducing your energy costs. If your HOA allows it, deploying shutters when you are away or during peak sun hours cuts down on solar gain and loss.

Ease of Use & Convenience

Accordion shutters are possibly the easiest-to-use manual shutter option on the market. Unlike plywood or storm panels, anyone in the household can open and close them quickly. No storage space needed — they are always in place and ready. In the open position, accordions stack neatly to each side, offering a full, unobstructed view from inside.

Our Work

Custom Design Pressure Analysis on Every Job

We perform design pressure calculations to ensure your shutters will not blow in or out during a storm — which can cause the home to implode from sudden internal pressure changes. Generic spec sheets from big-box stores do not account for your specific property. We calculate the actual wind load for your address, your elevation, your exposure category, and your building’s structural capacity.

Our accordion shutters meet ASTM E1886, ASTM E1996, ASTM E330, and TAS 201, 202, 203 certification requirements — ensuring superior protection from flying debris and wind pressure. Every installation includes complete product approval documentation for your insurer and your local building inspector.

We install all shutters to the exact specifications of the applicable storm codes. Our OSHA-30 certified crews have been doing this work since 2003, and our 7-year workmanship warranty is the longest in the region.

How It Compares

Accordion Hurricane Shutters vs. Other Shutter Systems

An honest side-by-side. We install all seven shutter types so our recommendation is based on your home, not what we have in stock.

ComparisonAccordion Hurricane ShuttersAlternative
vs. Storm Panels Deploys in <1 min1+ hours to set up Permanent, no storageMust store off-season
vs. Rolldowns Comparable protectionComparable protection From $34/sq ftFrom $48/sq ft
vs. Bahamas/Colonials Full opening coverageDecorative primary Deploy from insideDeploy from outside
vs. Impact Windows Full coverage when closedAlways protecting Can remove systemPermanent fixture
vs. Hurricane Screens Close from inside or outsideMust access from outside Doubles as securityNo security benefit
A note on Bahama and Colonial shutters: Bahamas and Colonials add more aesthetic value and may satisfy HOA requirements more easily. However, accordions can be closed from inside or outside, while a rated Colonial close is done only from outside. Accordions can be installed on decks and doors where Bahamas are not recommended or possible. Hurricane screens are easier to use on patios, but screens are not recommended to be placed directly against openings due to the potential to break glass during impact events.
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Real questions from Carolina homeowners. If yours is not here, call us or visit our full FAQ page.

Accordion shutters start at $34 per square foot installed. A typical 3-bedroom coastal home runs $8,000 to $18,000 for full coverage depending on the number and size of openings. Use our cost calculator for a personalized estimate, or call us for a free in-home quote.
Installation itself is typically one day. However, because every shutter is custom-fabricated to your openings, plan for 3 to 4 months from signing to installation day — less during the October-March off-season. Order before May to be sure you are covered for hurricane season.
Yes. Accordion shutters are one of the best systems for sliding glass doors and large openings precisely because they fold to the side rather than requiring a panel to be carried and slotted. We install them on doors up to 20+ feet wide.
Yes, and it is straightforward. Exercise them monthly, lubricate the top-track wheels with a plastic-safe silicone spray twice a year, and wash the hinges and folds with mild soap annually. When closed, the inside fold’s hinge opens so you can clean and wipe out the inner joints. Let them dry and apply dry lubricant spray from top to bottom on the inside hinge of each fold. See our full Maintenance Guide.
In most cases, yes. We have submitted HOA Architectural Modification Requests for hundreds of properties. We handle the documentation. Standard colors (white, beige, tan, bronze) satisfy most HOA requirements.
We offer a 7-year workmanship warranty — the longest in the region. Manufacturer product warranties also apply. We deliver a signed warranty agreement at completion and return for paid service at any point during the shutter lifetime.
Yes. Accordion shutters serve as a strong physical barrier between your home and potential intruders. The typical push locks would need to be ground off to open, while mortise locks would require the shutter itself to be cut apart for entry. Most intruders rely on quick, unseen access — needing power tools gives police or your family the necessary time to react. For maximum security, we also recommend rolldown shutters.
Yes. In a closed or semi-closed position, accordion shutters reflect the sun’s harsh rays and provide shade, creating an additional layer of insulation. This helps keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter, leading to energy savings. If your HOA allows it, daily deployment can cut down on solar gain and loss year-round.
