Our Hurricane Shutter Projects
From oceanfront residences and historic churches to waterfront restaurants and university buildings — a selection of shutter installations across coastal NC and SC.
Figure Eight Island
When a well-known customer needed to protect their oceanfront property on Figure Eight Island, they turned to American Hurricane Shutters for a solution. With a large number of windows on the home, electric rolldown shutters were the perfect choice for high-strength protection during hurricanes. These shutters also provide added security and deflect wind-driven rain. Despite the challenges presented by the marine environment and high elevations, the experienced team at American Hurricane ensured that the shutters would work flawlessly in any weather event. This project was the largest residential contract to date for American Hurricane, and their team was proud to provide a solution that met all of the customer’s needs.
Bluewater Waterfront Grill
To protect their outdoor bar and dining area from potential hurricane damage or theft, Bluewater Restaurant in Wrightsville Beach turned to American Hurricane Shutters for a solution. The restaurant built three cabinets using Ipe Brazilian wood to house the bronze electric rolldown shutters, providing both safety and security for the bar and its contents. With the convenience of hand-held “clickers,” the shutters can be quickly closed at a moment’s notice, saving the restaurant valuable time and effort in preparation for a storm.
Bald Eagle Lane
One retired U.S. Military General wanted a cost-effective solution that would allow him to quickly secure his home in the event of a storm. After a thorough assessment of his needs, a combination of electric rolldowns, Bahama shutters, Lexan, and aluminum panels were installed to provide maximum protection. This custom storm installation not only met the General’s needs but also ensured the safety of his home during hurricane season.
Oceanic Bar & Grill
To protect their pier bar and dining area from hurricane damage, Oceanic turned to American Hurricane Shutters for a solution. The pier bar was enclosed with electric rolldown shutters on all four sides, with two shutters measuring 20 feet wide by 6 feet tall and two measuring 8 feet wide by 15 feet tall. These shutters can be easily operated with a hand-held “clicker” and are used daily during outdoor dining season. Additionally, 16 clear Lexan wind breaks were installed that can be moved to either the North or South sides of the pier depending on the wind direction. Thanks to these measures, Oceanic can continue to offer their customers a safe and enjoyable dining experience.
UNCW Chancellor’s Mansion
When UNCW needed to protect their historic chancellor’s residence from hurricane damage, they turned to hurricane shutters as a solution. To maintain the building’s colonial style, the decision was made to replace the existing wooden shutters with hurricane-proof aluminum shutters. This not only provided the necessary protection but also preserved the aesthetic of the building.
Edgewater Club Road
To protect their home from the potential damage of hurricanes, the owners of this beautiful waterfront property opted for electric rolldown shutters. These shutters were installed on the large openings of the house, which were designed to showcase the stunning views of the Intracoastal waterway. To meet the requirements of the homeowners association and complement the colors of the house, both white and bronze shutters were installed. Now, the owners can enjoy the beauty of their surroundings without worrying about the impact of severe weather. Even the front door is protected by an electric shutter — so they can have unrivaled security at the push of a button.
St. Therese Catholic Church
St. Therese Catholic Church, located in Wrightsville Beach, NC, has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. Despite enduring numerous hurricanes, including Hazel in 1954 and Fran in 1996, the church has remained a beloved landmark. To ensure its continued safety, American Hurricane Shutters was called upon to provide top-of-the-line storm protection that would not compromise the church’s aesthetic appeal. The team used NC and Florida rated shutters that met ASTM 1886 and 1996 code standards. The church was protected in two parts: an electric rolldown for the 20-foot-tall stained glass window on the front facade and manual rolldowns for the remaining openings. Additionally, the parish house was safeguarded with hurricane-rated aluminum storm panels.
Waterfront Traditional
When it comes to protecting your home from hurricanes, you don’t have to sacrifice style for safety. Take this waterfront home, for example. The owners wanted to keep their beautiful custom home design intact while also preparing for the frequent storms in the area. Our team recessed custom rolldowns into the soffit, to seamlessly integrate into the facade that provided the necessary protection without detracting from the home‘s beauty. In fact, the home was even featured in Wilmington Magazine for its stunning exterior, which included our discreet hurricane shutter solution.
Hurricane Shutter Installation Across Every Property Type in Coastal NC & SC
The projects on this page represent a cross-section of what American Hurricane Shutters installs on the Carolina coast — from single-family oceanfront homes and waterfront condominiums to restaurants, churches, university buildings, and large commercial properties. Every project on this page was completed by our own full-time installation team with no subcontractors, using 304 stainless steel fasteners and site-specific design pressure calculations.
The most common question we hear after a homeowner sees our commercial work is: “Can you do that for a residential property?” The answer is always yes. The same aerial lift equipment and OSHA-30 certified crew that installed rolldown shutters on the 20-foot stained glass facade of St. Therese Catholic Church installs shutters on two-story beach homes at Figure Eight Island and Topsail Beach. Scale is not a limiting factor for us.
Electric Rolldown Shutters — Our Most Commonly Featured Commercial System
Several of the projects on this page feature electric rolldown shutters — and for good reason. For commercial properties like restaurants, bars, and retail spaces, the ability to close and secure all openings quickly with a handheld remote is operationally essential. The Oceanic Bar & Grill installation demonstrates what electric rolldowns can do at large scale: 20-foot-wide openings on a pier bar, used daily during outdoor dining season, closed in seconds before a squall arrives. For residential customers who are frequently absent before storms — particularly second homeowners in Myrtle Beach, Topsail Island, or Emerald Isle — electric rolldowns offer the same peace of mind: your home can be secured remotely or by a neighbor at the push of a button. Historic and HOA-Governed Properties
The UNCW Chancellor’s Mansion and St. Therese Catholic Church projects illustrate something important: hurricane protection does not have to compromise the character of a historic or architecturally significant building. At UNCW, the existing wooden shutters were replaced with hurricane-rated aluminum shutters that maintained the building’s colonial aesthetic. At St. Therese, the challenge was a 20-foot stained glass window on a facade that had survived Hurricane Hazel and Hurricane Fran — protected now by an electric rolldown specifically sized and engineered for that opening.
We have submitted Architectural Modification Requests for hundreds of HOA-governed properties across coastal NC and SC. Rated shutters are available in any standard RAL powder-coat color. The Edgewater Club Road condominium project required both white and bronze shutters to satisfy the HOA’s requirements — both were installed on the same project. View our color guide.
The Soffit-Recessed Rolldown: When Aesthetics Matter Most
The Waterfront Traditional project — featured in Wilmington Magazine — is our most-requested example of what is possible when storm protection is designed into a home rather than bolted onto it. Custom rolldown shutters recessed flush into the soffit are completely invisible when retracted. When deployed they provide full certified coverage. This approach requires careful coordination during planning and precise field work during installation, but the result is a home that looks exactly as the architect intended — and is fully protected when it needs to be.
For a beautiful coastal aesthetic, many opt for Bahama shutters in Wilmington, Porter’s Neck, and Figure Eight Island or choose Bahama shutters for Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island. We also install Bahama shutters for Jacksonville and Swansboro, NC alongside premium Bahama shutters for St. James and Bald Head Island. If you prefer traditional styles, explore our classic Colonial shutters for historic Southport and Shallotte. We offer tailored solutions like the best hurricane shutters for condos in Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, allow you to upgrade your lanai with hurricane screens for Leland and St. James, or utilize retractable hurricane screens for Hampstead and Swansboro waterfronts. When comparing top screen brands, find out Phantom Screens vs Stormtex: what’s the difference.
