Customizable Roll-Down Hurricane Shutters: Configurations, Options, and Pricing

Roll-down hurricane shutters are one of the most flexible systems we install — not because every job looks the same, but because the configuration options are wide enough to fit almost any opening, any architectural style, and any operational preference. This guide covers every meaningful choice: manual vs. motorized, housing types, slat profiles, motor options, control systems, and what each decision costs in practice.

How Roll-Down Shutters Work

A roll-down shutter is a continuous curtain of interlocking aluminum slats that rolls down from a housing box mounted above the opening. When fully deployed, the slats lock at the bottom track and form a sealed, impact-rated barrier. When retracted, the entire system disappears into the housing. There are no panels to store, no tracks visible on the sides of the window when open, and nothing to deploy by hand for motorized systems.

The slats transfer wind loads and impact forces into the side tracks, which transfer into the structural framing via the mounting hardware. A design pressure analysis determines the specific slat profile, track gauge, and anchor specification required for your location and opening size. AHS performs this analysis on every installation at no charge.

Manual vs. Motorized: The Core Decision

Every roll-down system is either manually operated (a spring-assisted crank or strap) or motorized. This is the single most consequential choice because it affects daily usability, deployment speed during a storm, and installed cost.

Manual Roll-Down Shutters

Manual systems use a spring-loaded barrel that offsets the weight of the slats. Smaller openings — typically under 8 feet wide — use a simple pull strap. Wider openings use a side-mounted hand crank. Manual systems are fully functional during a power outage, require no wiring, and cost significantly less than motorized equivalents. At approximately $34–$48/sq ft installed, manual roll-down shutters are the most affordable permanently-installed rated shutter system we offer.

Motorized Roll-Down Shutters

Motorized systems use a tubular motor inside the barrel. The shutter deploys and retracts at the push of a button — from a wall switch, key switch, remote control, or smartphone app. Multiple shutters can be grouped so a single command deploys all openings simultaneously. Motorized systems start at approximately $48–$64/sq ft installed.

Battery Backup

Any motorized system can be specified with a battery backup that allows full operation during power outages — exactly when you are most likely to need to deploy shutters. AHS strongly recommends battery backup for all motorized installations. It adds modest cost and eliminates the single most common concern about motorized shutters.

Housing Options

  • Exterior surface mount: Housing sits above the opening on the outside wall. Simplest to install, requires no structural modification. The housing is visible from outside.
  • Built-in (recessed) housing: Integrated into the soffit, fascia, or wall cavity so it is invisible when shutters are open. Requires planning during construction or renovation.
  • Interior mount: Housing and guides mounted on the interior side. Less common but useful for covered lanais where exterior mounting is constrained.

Slat Profiles

The slat profile — its cross-sectional shape, wall thickness, and interlocking geometry — determines the wind pressure and impact resistance rating. AHS sources slats from Bertha HV and Alutech, both tested to ASTM E1886/E1996 standards. The profile required for your installation is determined by the design pressure analysis, not by aesthetic preference. Standard finishes include smooth and wood-grain textures in a range of powder-coat colors.

Control System Options

For motorized systems, the control interface can be configured as a hardwired wall switch, key switch, radio frequency remote, smartphone app via Z-Wave or proprietary integration, or wind sensor automation that deploys shutters automatically when wind speed exceeds a threshold. Multiple shutters can be grouped so a single command deploys all openings simultaneously.

Permit note: All roll-down shutters require a building permit in coastal NC and SC counties. AHS handles permit coordination on every installation at no additional charge. Our design pressure analysis documentation meets the submission requirements of every county building department in our service area.

Installation Process

A typical roll-down shutter installation takes one to two days for a full home. The sequence: measurement and design pressure analysis, fabrication (2–4 weeks), permit submission and approval, installation day. On installation day, mounting hardware is set first, the housing is installed, the barrel and slat curtain are loaded, the bottom bar and seals are adjusted, and for motorized systems the motor is wired and controls are programmed and tested.
