Accordion Shutters vs. Roller Shutters: Which Is Better?

Accordion shutters versus rolldown roller shutters on a coastal Carolina home
Bottom LineAccordion shutters at $34/sq ft are the better value for standard residential openings. Roller shutters at $48/sq ft+ are the better choice for very wide openings and homeowners who want electric pushbutton operation. Both can be ASTM-rated.

Accordion shutters vs. roller shutters comes down to two factors: opening width and how much you value pushbutton convenience. I’ve installed both across Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, and the Grand Strand since 2007.

How the Mechanisms Differ

Accordion shutters fold side-to-side on a wall-mounted track — no housing box needed, entirely mechanical, will work in a power outage. Roller shutters coil into a housing mounted above the opening. Manual versions use a strap or crank; electric versions run on a motor. The housing box is visible above every opening — an architectural consideration on some home styles.

Opening Width: Where Rolldown Has the Edge

Accordion shutters work best on openings up to approximately 12–14 feet wide. Beyond that, panel flex and track complexity increase. Rolldown shutters handle very wide spans — up to 20+ feet for residential — making them the standard for garage bays, wide lanais, and commercial storefronts. For typical residential windows (2–5 ft) and sliding glass doors (6–12 ft), accordion shutters are the cleaner, lower-cost solution.

Convenience: Where Electric Rolldown Has the Edge

Electric rolldown closes at the push of a button, or on a timer. For elderly homeowners, homes with many openings, or high-end second homes where automation is a priority, electric rolldown earns its premium ($48/sq ft + $700/opening). For most full-time residents, accordion shutters’ 8-minute whole-house closure is fast enough.

Maintenance

Accordion shutters have fewer moving parts — annual cleaning and lubrication per our maintenance guide is typically sufficient. Rolldown shutters have spring tension, limit switches, and (in electric models) motor systems requiring periodic inspection. Salt-air environments accelerate corrosion on both — AHS uses coated components for coastal installations.
