Geography first, because it changes the answer. Southport stands at the mouth of the Cape Fear, where the river opens into the ocean, with water on two sides and very little between the town and the Atlantic. Addresses thirty miles upriver get the storm after it has crossed a great deal of land. This one does not. Whatever you put on these windows is going to be asked a harder question than the same product would be asked in Leland or Wilmington.

The reason colonials come up at all in this town is that Southport is unusual: elsewhere a historic district is one neighborhood inside a larger place, but here the village more or less is the historic district. Streets on both sides of Howe and Bay were built with working wood shutters, and the way the town looks is a substantial part of why people visit it, film in it and move to it. That makes appearance a practical constraint on far more houses here than it would be in a city.
A colonial is the only rated system with no silhouette of its own. There is no head box above the opening and no housing at either side, so from the street the house reads the way it always did. That is what tends to get an application through, and we prepare and submit the documentation as part of the job.
Two honest limits. Closing is manual and takes one to two minutes a window, so a whole house is an afternoon against an accordion’s ten minutes. And color is included across the standard RAL range, but a true custom blend for a historic paint with no equivalent adds $1,500 and one to two weeks.
