Why Brunswick County Homeowners Choose AHS

The South Coast’s Most Trusted Hurricane Shutter Installer

Brunswick County stretches from the fast-growing suburbs of Leland to the remote shores of Bald Head Island — and every community faces serious hurricane exposure. At American Hurricane Shutters, we have been protecting Brunswick County homes since 2006. We are the only OSHA-30 certified hurricane shutter company in coastal NC and SC, and we back every installation with the longest workmanship warranty in the region: 7 years.

Brunswick County’s property diversity demands a custom approach — the strict Architectural Review Board requirements of Winding River and St. James Plantation are nothing like the laid-back beach cottage aesthetic of Oak Island storm protection. Every project starts with a site-specific design pressure analysis. Transparent pricing — use our cost calculator or call +19102561288.

We install all seven major hurricane shutter types exclusively. No awnings, no siding, no roofing. Hurricane shutters are all we do, and we do them better than anyone on the South Coast.

Every Job Starts with a Design Pressure Analysis

Brunswick County’s Wind-Borne Debris Region designation means your shutters must meet specific wind-load requirements — and those requirements vary based on your exact location, setback from the water, building construction type, and opening size. We perform a site-specific design pressure analysis on every project.

Our crew — never subcontractors — handles everything from HOA submittal documentation to permit coordination to final installation. Every fastener is stainless steel or corrosion-resistant coated carbon steel, anchored deep into structural framing to exceed NC coastal building code shear requirements.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Hurricane Shutters in Brunswick County, NC

The questions we hear most at Brunswick County estimate visits. For more, see the full AHS FAQ page.

Prices range from $26/sq ft for aluminum storm panels to $70/sq ft for articulating Bahama shutters. Accordion shutters start at $38/sq ft installed. Manual rolldowns start at $52/sq ft; electric rolldowns at $52/sq ft plus $700 per opening. All include our 7-year workmanship warranty. Use our cost calculator for an instant estimate.
Accordion shutters are the overwhelming choice. No storage required, one person can deploy the entire home in under 20 minutes, and they lock securely from inside — critical on change-over days. They also satisfy HOA appearance requirements common in Holden Beach and Ocean Isle Beach communities.
Yes. St. James Plantation has one of the most rigorous ARB processes in the county — pre-approval submittals function as genuine design reviews with specific standards on shutter appearance, color, and hardware. Brunswick Forest and Compass Pointe also maintain active ARB review. We handle all submittal documentation, color approval, and permit coordination as standard — no extra charge.
Brunswick County is designated as a Wind-Borne Debris Region under NC building code — all new construction and permitted renovations must protect all openings. For existing homes, shutters are not legally required unless doing permitted work, but they are required for wind mitigation insurance credits and strongly recommended for any oceanfront, soundfront, or ICW-adjacent property.
Yes. All materials are transported via ferry and barge — a logistical challenge we plan around. Flat polycarbonate Lexan panels are popular for odd-shaped windows with ocean views, and accordion shutters are common for standard openings. Contact us to plan the installation timeline.
Rated shutters that protect all openings typically qualify for wind mitigation insurance credits in NC. We provide installation documentation and product certifications after every job. For many snowbird and vacation rental owners, annual savings meaningfully offset the cost over a 5–10 year horizon.

The team installed kevlar enforced rollup hurricane screens all around our porch 5 years ago. We purchased them because a relative has them and was very pleased. We live right on the water near the mouth of the Neuse River in Oriental so they get tested regularly. They’ve protected our house through tropical storms, snow storms and hurricanes. They’ve held up and continue to work well. They weren’t inexpensive, but well worth the money through our experience. We highly recommend them!

I am very pleased with my new white hurricane shutters that can easily be pulled shut even from indoors in case of really windy weather. These are so much more practical than the heavy metal shutters we had to install for strong storms and then remove again in order to see out.

I had an excellent experience with American Hurricane Shutters! Mr. Burns met us promptly at our convenience to explain his array of products. We chose the accordion style hurricane shutters for our Ocean front side. I was notified in a timely fashion when they were about to arrived and allowed to pick a convenient date for installation at our house on Wrightsville Beach NC. The installers were kind enough to wait for us to come after they were finished do demonstrate their function. I tore a rotator cuff trying to close our 30 yr old rusty shutters and now can close these just using my finger tips! I highly recommend this company.

Great experience. Had an issue with the manufacturer's finish a year later, and they replaced the hurricane shutter without question. The installation was thorough as we expected the first time, but many businesses attempt to evade warranty work or address their problems once they've received their payment. Not here. 100% recommended. Was an excellent option for our home in Surf City.

The AHS team did a great job for us. We were not in town for much of the planning and installation, so placed lots of trust in their team. The communication was great, the work exceptional, and they followed up promptly on small issues until everything was complete. I would highly recommend.

Built to Exceed Brunswick County Wind Loads

Brunswick County spans some of North Carolina’s most exposed coastline, from the barrier-island beaches to the mainland communities along the Cape Fear River. Under ASCE 7-16, which the current NC Building Code is based on, the ultimate design wind speed here runs roughly 150 mph and up depending on location (Risk Category II). The area sits within the Wind-Borne Debris Region, where the NC Building Code requires protected openings — so hurricane shutters are a code requirement here, not just a precaution.

We treat that figure as a floor, not a target. Before installing, AHS performs a site-specific design pressure analysis for your Brunswick County property — accounting for the home’s height, exposure, roof geometry, and the loads each opening will actually see — and engineers every installation to exceed those numbers rather than simply meet code.
