Aluminum vs. Clear Polycarbonate Storm Panels: Which Is Right for Your Home?
This is one of the most common questions we get. Both aluminum and clear polycarbonate storm panels provide certified hurricane protection, both are removable and stored between storms, and both are far more affordable than permanent shutter systems. The choice comes down to three factors: cost, visibility, and long-term durability. Here is a complete side-by-side breakdown.
How Both Systems Work
Storm panels — whether aluminum or polycarbonate — are flat panels that bolt over a window or door opening using tracks or direct fasteners. They are installed before a storm and removed and stored afterward. Unlike accordion or roll-down shutters, they are not permanently mounted. This makes them the most affordable rated hurricane protection option available, and also the most labor-intensive to use.
AHS installs Bertha HV panels in both materials. Both are tested to ASTM E1886/E1996 (impact) and ASTM E330 (wind pressure) and carry product approvals for NC and SC permitting.
The Side-by-Side Comparison
| Factor | Aluminum Panels | Clear Polycarbonate |
|---|---|---|
| Installed cost | ~$18/sq ft | ~$22/sq ft |
| Impact rating | ASTM E1886/E1996 | ASTM E1886/E1996 |
| Visibility when deployed | None — completely opaque | Clear — full visibility |
| Weight | Heavier | Lighter |
| Long-term durability | Excellent — no degradation | Good — UV yellowing over 10-15 yrs |
| Scratch resistance | High | Moderate — scratches easily |
| Light transmission | None | High |
| Storage visibility | Opaque silver/white | Clear/transparent |
| Coastal corrosion | Powder coat protects well | Not applicable |
Cost: Aluminum Wins
Aluminum panels are roughly 20% less expensive than equivalent polycarbonate panels. For a full-home installation covering 10 windows and 2 doors at an average of 20 sq ft per opening, that difference is approximately $800–$1,200. If budget is the primary concern, aluminum is the right choice.
Visibility: Polycarbonate Wins Clearly
This is where polycarbonate earns its premium. When aluminum panels are deployed, your home is in complete darkness during daylight hours. You cannot see outside at all. For homeowners who shelter in place during storms, this creates a genuinely unpleasant multi-day experience — no natural light, no ability to monitor exterior conditions, no awareness of what is happening outside.
Clear polycarbonate panels eliminate this entirely. Light comes through, you can see outside, and you can monitor structural conditions around your property. If you regularly shelter in place during tropical systems, this quality-of-life difference is real and significant.
Durability: Aluminum Wins Long-Term
Aluminum panels are essentially indestructible. They can be dented and scratched, but they do not degrade structurally over time. A set of aluminum panels installed today will perform identically in 20 years assuming they are not physically damaged. Polycarbonate panels will develop UV haze and minor discoloration over 10–15 years depending on storage conditions and UV exposure. The protection they provide does not diminish, but they will look noticeably older than aluminum panels of the same age.
Weight and Handling
Polycarbonate panels are lighter than aluminum for the same size. For homeowners who install their own panels before storms — particularly older homeowners or those without a helper — this difference is noticeable on larger panels. Lifting and positioning a 4×6 ft aluminum panel solo is a workout. The polycarbonate equivalent is meaningfully easier.
Our Recommendation
Choose aluminum if cost is your primary factor, if you evacuate during storms and do not shelter in place, or if you want maximum long-term durability. Choose clear polycarbonate if you shelter in place and value natural light and visibility, if you are managing panels solo and appreciate the lighter weight, or if the ~$800–$1,200 premium for a full home is acceptable. Many homeowners choose polycarbonate for the main living area and aluminum for secondary openings — getting visibility where it matters most at a modest premium over an all-aluminum installation.
