What they exist for on this island is the deck. Almost every house here is elevated, and almost every elevated house has a wide covered deck facing the water with a slider behind it. That deck is structurally an opening, it is usually the widest one on the building, and no accordion or roll-down covers it without dropping a post through the middle to carry the track. A screen spans the full width with nothing in between.

It also deals with what is standing on the deck. Chairs, tables, a grill and a cooler on an unprotected deck two stories up are projectiles, and every one of them is pointed at the glass behind them. Closing the opening handles the furniture problem and the slider problem together, and it is the part of the value that never appears on a quote.

The deck is an opening
People protect windows and leave the deck open, then wonder where the damage came from. An elevated Topsail deck is a wide unglazed opening two stories up with furniture on it, facing either the ocean or the sound.
