Unlike other systems, Bahama shutters are hinged at the top and propped open from the bottom, providing privacy and shade while staying permanently mounted above your windows.

Bahama shutters require very little upkeep. Operate them monthly to keep hinges and prop arms moving freely. Clean 1-2 times per year with mild soap and a soft brush, rinsing with fresh water after salt exposure. Lubricate all hinges and prop arm hardware annually with a dry marine-grade silicone spray. Every Bahama shutter installation we perform includes a site-specific design pressure analysis. We calculate the actual wind loads at your address and specify the correct fastener pattern and track system — not a generic spec sheet. Rated fixed-blade and articulating Bahamas are certified to meet the design pressure requirements for coastal NC and SC wind zones.

The terms are used interchangeably throughout the coastal Carolinas. The key design feature is the top hinge: the shutter pivots out from the top and is held open at an angle by an adjustable prop arm.
Partially. Bahama shutters are propped open from the outside using an adjustable arm and close by releasing the prop and letting the shutter drop flat against the window. Ground-floor closures are straightforward. Upper-floor windows typically require a ladder or pole tool. For homes where interior-only operation is essential, accordion shutters or rolldown shutters are a better fit — we are happy to compare at your estimate visit.
Yes, in most cases. Bahama shutters are among the most HOA-friendly hurricane protection options because they look like traditional tropical architectural shutters rather than storm hardware. They are available in any standard RAL powder-coat color to match your home’s trim. Yes, if you install rated (not decorative) Bahama shutters covering all openings. NC and SC insurers offer wind mitigation credits for homes with certified, permanently installed shutters. We provide all product approval documentation and complete the wind mitigation form for your insurer. Many of our customers see premium reductions that recover a meaningful portion of the installation cost within the first few renewal cycles.
Installation itself is typically one day for a standard home. Because every shutter is custom-fabricated to your exact opening dimensions, the lead time from signed contract to installation day is typically 4 to 8 weeks. Order before May to ensure coverage before hurricane season peaks in August and September.
Bahama shutters work well on most standard windows up to about 6-8 feet wide. They require flat wall space above the opening for the hinge hardware and enough clearance for the shutter to prop open at an angle. They are not ideal for very wide openings like sliding glass doors (accordion shutters are better there), for casement windows that swing outward, or for areas with overhangs that would prevent the shutter from propping at the correct angle. Our estimator will identify any openings where a different system would serve you better.
