St. Therese Catholic Church has been a fixture at Wrightsville Beach, NC since the early 1900's. This beautiful oceanfront church has weathered a number of hurricanes and suffered significant damage in 1954 (Hazel) and 1996 (Fran). American Hurricane Shutters was asked to provide state of the art storm protection, while not detracting from the beauty of the church.
Our protection plan was designed using NC and Florida rated shutters, adhering to ASTM 1886 and 1996 code standards. The church was protected in two parts; an electric rolldown for the large stained glass window and manual rolldowns for the balance of the openings.
The electric rolldown for the stained glass window measures approximately 135" wide by 214" tall. Slat system is 58mm end retention. An oversized motor and heavy duty reel were included. The shutter operates with a hand held "clicker".
The balance of the church was protected with 40mm manual rolldowns, which include a smaller hood size and narrower side rails to ensure the shutters would not detract from the building elevations.
We also protected the parish house using hurricane rated aluminum storm panels.
The project was completed within 4 weeks of contact, with the actual installation taking approx. one week.
